Desire: The First Step Toward Achieving Success

Desire: to wish or long for; crave; want. to express a wish to obtain; ask for;

After you have decided what you want out of life, that is your main aim in life, the very first step is to WANT it so bad you can taste it—constantly. If you don't have a white HOT, burning DESIRE for what you want, develop one—RIGHT NOW!

Any person who succeeds, in any enterprise must be willing to 'burn his ships' and remove all ways of retreat. Only by doing that can they be sure of maintaining that state of mind known as a BURNING DESIRE TO WIN. That all consuming fire of desire is absolutely essential.

''A long time ago, a great warrior faced a situation which made it necessary for him to make a decision which insured his success on the battlefield. He was about to send his armies against a powerful enemy, any enemy who outnumbered his own. He loaded his soldiers into boats, sailed to the enemy's country, unloaded soldiers and equipment, then gave the order to burn the ships that had carried them! His soldiers were astonished. Addressing his men before the battle, he said, "You see the boats going up in smoke. That means that we cannot leave these shores alive unless we win! We now have no choice--we win--or we perish!
They won.''
—Napoleon Hill, Think and Grow Rich

If you are a history buff, you know that this is the story of Cortés and the burning of his ships. the year was 1519, Hernán Cortés landed in the New World with six hundred men and, upon arrival, made history by destroying all of his ships. This sent a clear message to his men: There is no turning back. We have to succeed.

The desire you seek is within you. It comes from you, your heart and soul. No one can give it to you. The are, however, steps that anyone can takes to draw out that desire and cement it. Once you have it, you'll know it!

First, know the sacrifices and hard work involved in becoming a success, but focus on the rewards of success. It's the 'carrot to the horse'. Knowing what rewards you can earn jump-starts your desire and makes you strive toward your goal or your WANT.

Learn everything you can about your WANT. Knowledge is potential power. Knowing what to do and how to do it is one of the keys to success. Knowing builds confidence too.

Watch others and how they work and perform. Use them as mentors. Take advantage of every chance you have to see and hear successful people in your area of interest, in person or on television and You Tube. The more you study successful people, the more familiar you will become with what it takes to succeed.

Constantly and continually remind yourself of your WANT. Feed the flames of your white hot burning desire and stoke the fires of enthusiasm. Visualize the heights you can reach, the success you can achieve—and all the happiness that goes with that success.

Every success starts with a thought and burning desire, the starting point of all achievement is desire. You start on the road to success when you choose a definite goal and you shift all your energy, power and effort toward that goal. You have to get emotionally invested in your goal and live every second of each day like you have already reached your goal. In the beginning your desire is usually just a wish and over time it becomes a living goal. As Napoleon Hill says in Think & Grow Rich, ''you stand behind your desire until it becomes the dominating obsession of your life and finally a fact.''
