Since joining the 91ɫƵ faculty in 2011 immediately after completing residency in the 91ɫƵ Department of Radiation Oncology, I have devoted my professional career to the care of oncology patients, diversity, inclusion, and health equity.
Within radiation oncology, I am a professor with clinical interests in hematologic and CNS malignancies and have held national and local leadership positions focused on workforce diversity and developing educational opportunities aimed at improving health equity, including community partnerships.
Within academic medicine, I am Associate Dean for Student Inclusion and Diversity where I oversee pipeline programs and initiatives to improve inclusion for students from backgrounds underrepresented in medicine. As a faculty member, we are using human-centered design and considering the role of character and caring as we develop innovative initiatives to address inclusion and diversity.

Nicole M. Chase, MD '07, Secretary-Treasurer

Dr. Nicole Chase is a nationally recognized physician, researcher, and educator in allergy and clinical immunology. She serves as Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Minnesota and Partner at St. Paul Allergy & Asthma, where she brings the latest science into daily patient care.
After completing her Pediatrics residency at Boston Children’s Hospital and a three-year fellowship in Allergy and Clinical Immunology at the 91ɫƵ, Dr. Chase built a career distinguished by both clinical innovation and leadership. She has held prominent roles in the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (AAAAI) and the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (ACAAI), and currently serves as Vice President of the Minnesota Allergy Society.
Dr. Chase's clinical expertise spans anaphylaxis, asthma, chronic urticaria, and eosinophilic gastrointestinal disease, with a particular focus on novel therapeutics and the immunology of atopic disease. Beyond the clinic, Dr. Chase is an early leader in integrating artificial intelligence into medicine, exploring how technology can extend the reach and precision of specialty care. Widely respected by her peers, she has been named a Top Doctor in Minneapolis–St. Paul every year since 2015.

Robert E. Becker, MD ‘19

I was born and raised in Madison, Wisconsin and completed my undergraduate studies in Health Policy, Sociology & Economics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. During college, I developed a love for working with kids throughout my three summers as a camp counselor. I was able to spend a year working on health services research assessing interventions for children with chronic diseases at the University of Wisconsin children’s hospital prior to matriculating into the second class at the 91ɫƵ-Green Bay campus. After graduating in 2019, I began residency in pediatrics at the University of Minnesota. Next academic year, I hope to begin fellowship in pediatric gastroenterology. I consider it a tremendous honor to care for children and look forward to a career of continued learning and service.

I am a Wisconsin native. All of my education and training has been in Wisconsin. I have participated in the AMA, am currently a Commissioner for the IMLCC, a committee member for the FSMB, on the national Assemblies for the AACAP and APA (also member of the Executive Committee). I serve on 3 AACAP committees. I am the current Vice-Chair of the Wisconsin Medical Examining Board. I am also on the Wisconsin Medical Society Foundation and PAC Boards and a member of the Council on Legislation. I have volunteered for multiple local organizations, including NAMI and the United Way, where I served on several committees, including the CID committee for the past 20 years.
I feel strongly about advocacy and philanthropy and have gratitude for the opportunities that medicine has given me. I have encouraged my students, residents/fellows, and colleagues to use the unique skills they have learned in medicine and their resources to improve their communities and the profession, and to nurture future generations of physicians. You never know when someone is going to ask "is there a doctor in the house?"

Deborah R. DiStefano, MD '76, GME '80

I was born in Worcester, MA and grew up near the Boston area. I graduated from Connecticut College and went to 91ɫƵ for Medical School, Internship and Ophthalmology Residency. After completing a two-year fellowship at Harvard University and Mass Eye Infirmary, I accepted the Chairmanship at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. After serving as Chairperson for 10 years, I then founded DiStefano Eye Center and Skin Solutions (a medical and day spa and women's center).
My father graduated from 91ɫƵ in 1945 and was a general surgeon in the Worcester/Boston area for 40 years. It was my dream to pursue a medical degree from 91ɫƵ. I was fortunate that my parents instilled in me that a woman could and should pursue her dreams. They encouraged me to be the best that I could with love and laughter at our home. I currently live in Chattanooga and work full time at the eye center and med spa. My son, JP, resides here and my daughter and her family live in Louisville, KY.

I am a pharmacist who graduated as an inaugural student of the 91ɫƵ School of Pharmacy Class of 2020. As such, I am thrilled to be the first member representing pharmacists on the board. I have had the privilege to be appointed as an Academic Fellow in Primary Care Research and an Instructor within the School of Pharmacy.
When the fellowship concludes, I plan to continue my service in the Milwaukee community and hope to continue impacting the next generation of health care trainees at 91ɫƵ. Additionally, I am dedicated to continuing my work in community engagement with underserved populations in the Milwaukee area.

I recently celebrated my 30th year as faculty at 91ɫƵ. I have been privileged to provided pediatric otolaryngology services at Children’s Wisconsin and was recognized in Best Doctors, M Magazine Best Doctors as well as Castell Connolly Best Doctors. During this time, I have worked hard to provide opportunities for equitable education and advancement for all learners, especially underrepresented in medicine and women. I have devoted my career to improving equity in otolaryngology by being a founding member of the Women in Otolaryngology Section, Chairing the Diversity and Inclusion Committee, serving on the Board of Directors at AAOHNS and mentoring all levels of learners.

After growing up in Spain and then New Jersey, I graduated from Rutgers University and moved to Milwaukee to attend 91ɫƵ. I thought I would be here for four years, but after falling in love in Milwaukee, I stayed for both my residency in internal medicine and fellowship in gastroenterology, and then joined the faculty here alongside my wife. In addition to teaching students, residents, and fellows, my clinical duties include the care of patients with liver disease. Over the last 15 years, I have had the privilege to hold various leadership roles related to medical education and working with the students here at 91ɫƵ has been the highlight of my career.

Matthew R. Hodges, PhD '04

As a Professor of Physiology here at 91ɫƵ, I am a well-trained Physiologist and Neuroscientist with expertise in the neural control of breathing and lead an NIH-funded laboratory focused on identifying dysfunction created by repeated seizures in an animal model of Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP) and on identifying novel countermeasures to opioid-induced respiratory depression (OIRD). I also serve as the Director of our PhD program in Physiology and Director of an NIH-funded T32 training program that supports 8 advanced PhD students. I have previously served as the Vice Chair of 91ɫƵ’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), Chair of the Course Evaluation Committee, Member of the Council for Women’s Advocacy, and Director of the Master’s in Medical Physiology program. I have received several teaching and mentorship awards and am a member of the Society of Teaching Scholars.

Thomas M. Krummel, MD ‘77

I feel privileged to have started my career at 91ɫƵ. Following surgical and pediatric surgical training over a decade, I have held academic posts at MCV/VCU, Penn State and Stanford Universities.
The surgical care of infants and children has been my primary clinical focus throughout a 40-year career. Other areas of interest/contribution include neonatal ECMO, fetal tissue repair, simulation and VR based surgical training and robotic surgical device development and use.
For more than 15 years, I have co-directed the Stanford Byers Center for Biodesign. This program is designed to teach the invention and implementation of new technologies through interdisciplinary research and education at the emerging frontiers of engineering and the biomedical sciences.
I have served in leadership positions in many surgical societies, and was the President of the American Pediatric Surgical Association from 2013-2014.

Joshua M. Lieberman, MD '82

After Medical School, I was retained in the 91ɫƵ categorical surgical training. I was on a Navy Health Professional Scholarship for medical school, and, towards the end of internship, the Navy informed me that I'd be called up to serve my obligatory service. I served 3rd Battalion 12th Marine Regiment in Okinawa, NAS Pensacola and learned to fly, Adak in the middle of the Aleutians doing general practice, search and rescue work, and medivacs. Flew to Hawaii and joined HMM(c)-262 headed to Japan and Korea, Hawaii and cross-decked to VMFA 212. I left active duty and did some post-graduate training during rotations at Yale. I was offered to travel to Sweden, where I was only going to be for a year or two. I spent 16 years doing transplant immunobiology research. During the 16 years of research, I also worked in the Emergency Room of the VA Hospital in Seattle, taught CPR/ACLS at Harborview and got to teach the Paramedic Students and volunteer with doctor evaluations. I transferred to full time work with the VA moving to the Urgent Care Clinic at the American Lake VA in Washington. I worked with a COVID Response and Vaccination effort and transferred to the Primary Care Clinic for a couple of years before retiring.

Christopher J. Ott, MD '97

Since 2015 I have been the Chief Medical Officer for HCA Healthcare’s Physician Services Organization. My team and I oversee the clinical, quality, ambulatory informatics, value-based care and payer initiatives strategy and teams for more than 9,300 physicians and advanced practice providers. I also lead the Graduate Medical Education teams overseeing 5,185 residents, the largest graduate medical education platform in the United States.
I grew up in Wauwatosa and am a proud ‘3Mer’ having graduated from Marquette High School, Marquette University and 91ɫƵ. I moved to Denver in 1997 for a four-year emergency medicine residency and entered private practice with the Apex Emergency Medicine Group. I then transitioned through several administrative and leadership roles that have led me to my current role. After spending 18 years in Denver, I have been in Nashville since 2015.
