What do students learn in the first year of pharmacy school?

Blog post written by: Bradley Townsend, 2027 PharmD Candidate

Patient interaction

Having never worked in healthcare prior to 91ɫƵ, this program has taught me a lot about patient interaction. In our classwork and practice, a large emphasis is placed on making sure students are emotionally intelligent when working with patients. This focus has set forth a great example and allowed me to build habits that are applicable not just to a pharmacy career, but also in everyday life.

Values of team-based collaboration

In the 91ɫƵ PharmD curriculum, much of our work is team-based, allowing us to practice and perfect the art of collaboration. As a pharmacist, collaboration between other healthcare professionals is a daily task and my classmates and I have had ample exposure and practice in exploring what makes for effective teamwork. Being able to count on those around you makes everyone’s job easier. Through this team-based learning, many vital assets such as accountability, communication and responsibility are perfected.

It is a marathon, not a sprint.

With an accelerated program like 91ɫƵ’s, the pace and workload can sometimes be overwhelming. The most valuable thing I learned is how break up responsibilities and tasks in a meaningful way. The small class size of the program has allowed me to lean on my instructors and peers if whenever I need help. Pharmacy is a small world and the relationships that you build through this program will last you a lifetime.
